Cracking the Agility Code #14

Cracking the Agility Code #14

Like many of my Shell International colleagues, I first learned about agility working on oil and gas drilling rigs as a Petroleum Engineer, onshore and offshore. Aged 21, helicopter out, helicopter back, week on, week off, when you’re on, you’re on, 24/7. Often in the middle of the night, freezing cold, horizontal snow driving in your face, high seas, hundreds of miles offshore, in the middle of a hefty operation running heavy equipment in the hole. It was a great experience, the closest thing I ever got to a boot camp. I found out a lot about agility, from which many of my insights first started emerging, which have served my business and leadership career well ever since. In particular, it’s where my instincts come from for triage, training up for the occasion and doing the work of crisis without the crisis!
